Beyond Basics

Time of Day

Certainly possible to shoot at high noon and pull off some killer shots, but it truly limits some of the photos we could create for you.

Most of the time the hour before sunset, the hour following sunset and sunset itself provide so much more opportunity for flattering on-location portraiture.

Sunrise and early morning work as well. Often hard to get up that early and look your best, but we have done some sessions at this time of day. Waterskiing or wake boarding sessions for instance are often best before the water gets choppy. If you want flattering sunlight in your shots and cannot shoot at sunset, sunrise is a viable option for some sessions. If you want frosty fall shots or dramatic fog, you cannot shoot them after the sun has melted the frost and nuked the fog, so you gotta get out early.

Props & Things

Our approach to props and things is usually “if it can be used, use it” rather than just posing with it. For instance you could pose with your wake board but it would be a lot more fun to be riding it, or both.

Action Shots

Static portraits are fun and necessary. But action shots are certainly a blast to do. Running, jumping, hiking, walking, biking, boating, sports, you name it…there are ways to incorporate them into your sessions with stunning results.

Easter Eggs

An often overlooked part of your personality that works for certain shots are “Easter eggs”. Things hidden in a photo, often overlooked, but there for a reason. Do you have something that makes you…well…you? Something your friends and family know about that you could have in a photo, even subliminally?
For instance a special place along a river or a special event that could be incorporated in some way, or an object that has significance to you. It is fun to hide these items in a photo and have people find them later an say “Ah-ha! That is sooo you!” so think about it. If you want to see some examples or discuss some ideas, just ask.

Time of Year

Summer is often paramount for one thing…the yearbook deadline. But you only need one selection for that deadline, then you have the rest of the year for other portrait ideas if you wish. Fall, winter, spring are also common for us to shoot. We don’t have group deadlines in mind, only your deadline. If you are one of those that just wants to get everything done at one time, that works us for too. We are flexible and here to solve your needs.
